On July 25, 2023, once again, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners invoked the GA procedure for increasing property taxes and voted to increase property taxes, impacting all residents this year and every future year. This decision, passed by a 3 (Cupid, Richardson, Sheffield - 2 (Birrell, Gambrill) vote, raised housing costs for homeowners and renters, making housing less affordable. Remarkably, by taking no action, the Board could have avoided this tax hike.
A one-time state tax credit in this year's bill masked the actual tax increase imposed by Cobb County. The 2022 budget of $1 billion surged to $1.17 billion in 2023, with a projected $1.2 billion for 2024—a staggering 20% increase in just two budget cycles. Consider whether your income has risen by 20% in the past two years. This unprecedented budget growth raises concerns about the financial strain it places on Cobb residents.
